Practical Motorist Magazine, dated October 1963. My Practical Motorist magazines date back to the sixties only – not so long ago in real terms, but reading the magazines you’d think they were far, far older. Articles on de-coking, striping suspension by the side of the road in your Sunday best, or – get this – building your own caravan from ply sheet. Not for those guys our modern cars where if a bulb blows the car is considered unreliable…. and where the car probably has to go into a dealer to have said bulb replaced [a side-light bulb went on our friends Vauxhall t'other day - nobody could suss how to replace it; turns out you hoist the car up on a ramp, and then remove half the front end using special torx bits]. …but then again many of the articles have a strangely familiar ring to them. Slow caravans, tyres worn because the tracking is out, squeeling brakes, dangerous overtaking on blind bends, or a suspiciously large number of adverts for concrete garages. Guess there really is nothing new in life after all. Many of the articles concern vehicle repairs, or dodges to keep a car going, that are just not undertaken nowadays, or where garage mechanics never knew, let alone forgot, certain automotive skills required to keep an old car going. Even the Haynes manuals for the cars concerned do not feature much of this information, so I guess if you are running a pre-1970′s car, then these magazines are ideal for you. They are certainly more – shall we say cereberal – than the crappy Practical Classics that we now have. This particular issue, for your interest and enjoyment, features: Period motoring adverts. Keeping the costs of motoring down. Nerus Elf test. Heating for your sports car. Repair a cracked block. Hillman Imp test. Are you observant. Pre-start lubrication.
